— Dealer vs security company

Who is a Control4 dealer in Austin? And what does an integrator do?

A Control4 dealer, or any home automation integrator, is the company that designs, installs and programs the system. Control4, Crestron and Josh.ai sell through certified integrators, not off a shelf. Alamo Smart Home designs, installs and programs Josh.ai, Control4, Crestron and Lutron systems in Austin homes.

When you search, you will run into two kinds of companies. A security company sells you a monitored alarm. An integrator wires and programs the lights, shades, audio, video, climate and locks so they all work from one app, one keypad and one voice. An alarm is a panel and sensors. An automation system is a design job, a wiring job and a programming job. Good programming is what makes it easy to live with.

We do both. Your alarm, cameras and locks are part of the house you want to control. When the same team handles the security system and the automation, you have one company to call when something stops talking to something else.

Control4 says on its own site that integrators “will personalize your system, automations, and scenes,” and that support goes through “your installing Integrator.” We don’t have an Austin showroom. We do the walkthrough in your home, and the work is done by our local Austin technicians.

— The Austin field

Which home automation companies come up in Austin? What each one publishes.

Search “home automation Austin” and you will see a handful of local integrators. Most are built around one or two platforms, and none of them publishes a price list. The table below is what each company’s own page said when we read it on October 15, 2026.

CompanyPlatforms named on its Austin pageAustin showroomPricing published
Austin Home SystemsControl4 (certified Control4 showroom), plus high-end audio brandsYesNo
AV ConnectLutron, Savant, Josh.ai, NICE, SonanceYes (experience center)“May start in the low five figures”

If you want to walk into a showroom first, several of these companies have one in Austin, and we do not. If you want one company for both the automation and the monitored security system, with salaried technicians instead of subcontractors, give us a call.

— Choosing a platform

Josh AI, Control4, Crestron or Lutron: which one fits your Austin home?

Josh.ai fits people who want to talk to the house in plain sentences. Control4 fits whole-home control with a wide device catalog. Crestron fits large or complex homes. Lutron is the lighting and shade layer underneath most of them. Many homes use two: Lutron for lights and shades, plus one control platform on top.

PlatformWhat it isUsually fits
Josh.aiVoice-first control and AI for the whole homeOwners who want natural voice, privacy by default, or are replacing a system that frustrated them
Control4Whole-home automation platform with a large catalog of compatible devicesOne interface for lights, AV, climate and security across the house
CrestronCrestron Home for residences, alongside a large commercial lineLarger or more complex homes, custom touch panels, heavy AV
LutronLighting control and motorized shades (Caséta, RadioRA 3, HomeWorks)Almost every project, as the lighting and shade system

Josh.ai

Josh.ai calls itself “AI Control for the Smart Home.” It is built voice-first, so one sentence can dim the lights, close the shades and lock the doors. Josh says your data “will never be shared for marketing purposes or sold.” It runs on its own processors and can also sit on top of Control4 through a certified driver. Josh.ai is the platform we recommend most, and we have a full page on it: Josh.ai home automation, explained.

Control4

Control4 describes itself as a platform that “connects a vast catalog of smart devices, bringing them all into one platform,” controlled from phones, touchscreens and keypads. It is sold and supported through certified integrators. It works well when you want one system to run the whole house and plan to add devices over time. Changes to programming usually go through your dealer, so pick your dealer as carefully as the platform.

Crestron

Crestron serves enterprise, education and government as well as homes, and Crestron Home is its residential platform. Crestron says it has “defined home touch screen excellence for decades.” It suits larger homes, dedicated theaters and owners who want custom-designed touch panels. It also takes the most programming of the four, so plan for that before you choose it.

Lutron

Lutron makes the lighting and shades that most of these systems control. Caséta is its entry-level line, RadioRA 3 is “pro-installed, wireless whole-home control,” and HomeWorks is its top whole-home system. We install RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks lighting, dimmers and motorized shades, and connect them to Josh.ai, Control4 or Crestron. If all you want is better lighting and shades, Lutron alone can be the whole project.

— Automation plus security

Can home automation control my alarm system? Yes. We set up both to work together.

Yes. Our security systems run on the Alarm.com platform with the newest Qolsys IQ Panel 5, cellular communication and battery backup. Your automation system can show alarm status and live cameras on a keypad, and with Josh.ai you can arm or disarm by voice. Monitoring stays with UCC, a professional central station, 24/7.

The automation system is for convenience: scenes, lights, shades, music, a “goodnight” command that locks up and arms the house. The alarm system is for life safety, and it keeps working on its own. If the automation processor reboots or your internet drops, the IQ Panel 5 still talks to the central station over cellular, on battery if the power is out.

Monitoring is handled by UCC (United Central Control) in San Antonio, which is UL-listed, FM-approved and TMA Five Diamond certified. You keep the Alarm.com app for security, and the automation app shows the same alarm and camera status alongside everything else.

If you already have a compatible panel, we can often take it over instead of replacing it. For the security side on its own, see Austin home security and how Alarm.com works. Austin requires a city alarm permit for monitored systems. The steps are on our Austin alarm permit guide.

— How a project runs

What does a home automation installation look like? Walkthrough to support.

Every project follows the same five steps: a walkthrough in your home, a design, the installation, the programming, and support afterward. How long each step takes depends on the size of the house and whether it is new construction or a retrofit, so we give you a schedule with the quote.

  • Walkthrough. We walk the house with you, room by room. How you use each space, what bugs you now, and what is already installed and worth keeping.
  • Design. We pick the platform, lay out keypads, touchscreens, microphones, speakers, shades and network gear, and put it in writing with the quote.
  • Install. Our salaried technicians run the wiring, build the rack and trim it out. On most retrofits we keep existing wiring, speakers, shades and lighting where we can.
  • Programming. Scenes, voice commands, keypad buttons and schedules, set up the way you live. This is what makes the system easy to use every day.
  • Support. A real person picks up at (210) 625-6575, Mon to Sat, 7am to 9pm. Most service calls are handled the same day.

Building new? Bring us in at the blueprint stage so pre-wire, rack location and trade coordination are planned before the drywall goes up. Audio and theater work is covered in more detail on our home audio and video page.

— What it costs

How much does home automation cost in Austin? It’s quoted after a walkthrough.

We do not publish automation prices, because the cost depends on the platform, the number of rooms, how much lighting and shading is involved, and what you already have. None of the Austin integrators we checked publishes a price list either. We quote after a free walkthrough, in writing, before any work starts.

The same things drive cost on every project: how many rooms are controlled, whether lighting is being replaced with a Lutron system, how many motorized shades, how much audio and video, and whether walls are open (new construction) or closed (retrofit). A lighting-and-shades project and a whole-home system with a theater are very different jobs.

For reference, one Austin integrator, AV Connect, says on its own site that a basic system “may start in the low five figures” (as published on avconnectonline.com on October 15, 2026). That is their figure, not ours. It was the only published number we found.

The security side is different, and its prices are published below. To compare monitoring costs on their own, see no-contract home security.

— Good questions

Austin home automation questions we hear most.

Dealers, platforms, Josh.ai cost and how automation works with your alarm. Still wondering about something? Call the local team at (210) 625-6575.

Who is a Control4 dealer in Austin?

Control4 is sold and supported through certified integrators. Alamo Smart Home installs and programs Control4 and serves Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Lakeway, Westlake and Dripping Springs, with local Austin technicians. Austin Home Systems also runs a certified Control4 showroom in Austin. Control4’s own site has a “Find Your Nearest Integrator” tool if you want to compare.

What does Josh AI cost?

Josh.ai is quoted per project, because the cost depends on how many rooms you control, which microphones and processors you need, and what Josh is connecting to, such as Lutron lighting or an existing Control4 system. We quote it in writing after a walkthrough. Our Josh.ai page covers the platform in detail: alamosmarthome.com/joshai-luxury-home-automation/.

Is there a Josh AI installer in Austin?

Yes. Alamo Smart Home designs, installs and programs Josh.ai in Austin-area homes. Josh makes the platform, and we handle the design, installation, programming and support. We also connect Josh.ai to Lutron lighting and shades, audio and video, and your Alarm.com security system, so one sentence can run several systems at once.

Is there a Crestron dealer in Austin?

Alamo Smart Home installs and programs Crestron Home in Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Lakeway, Westlake and Dripping Springs. Crestron tends to fit larger or more complex homes and custom touch panels. It also takes the most programming of any platform we install, so we will tell you at the walkthrough if a simpler system would suit you better.

Which is better, Control4 or Josh AI?

They do different jobs and often work together. Control4 is a whole-home automation platform. Josh.ai is voice-first control that can run on its own processors or sit on top of Control4 through a certified driver. If natural voice and privacy matter most to you, we usually recommend Josh.ai. If you want one system with a large device catalog, Control4 fits well.

How much does home automation cost in Austin?

It depends on the platform, the number of rooms, the lighting and shades involved, and whether the house is new or a retrofit. We quote after a free walkthrough and do not publish automation prices. Security monitoring is separate and published: $19.99/mo, or $24.99/mo with video analytics and cloud recording, with no contract required.

Can home automation arm my alarm system?

Yes. Our alarm systems run on Alarm.com with the newest Qolsys IQ Panel 5, and the automation system can show alarm status and camera feeds. With Josh.ai you can arm and disarm by voice. The alarm keeps working on its own over cellular with battery backup, so a reboot or internet outage does not stop monitoring.

Do you have a showroom in Austin?

No. We do not have an Austin office or showroom yet. We do the walkthrough in your home, where you can show us how you use each room, and the work is done by our local Austin technicians. If you want to see equipment in a showroom first, several Austin integrators have one.

Can you take over an existing Control4 or Lutron system?

Often, yes. Most conversions keep existing wiring, speakers, shades and lighting. During the walkthrough we look at what is installed and tell you what can stay, what needs replacing and why. We can often take over a compatible alarm panel you already have, too, instead of replacing it.

What areas around Austin do you serve?

We serve Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Lakeway, Westlake and Dripping Springs for home automation and security. Our technicians are local, salaried Alamo employees, not subcontractors. Call (210) 625-6575. A real person picks up Monday through Saturday, 7am to 9pm.
