Local vs. national home security. What actually changes.
Both give you 24/7 professional monitoring. The contract, the equipment ownership and the phone number you call at 9pm are where they split. Where we name a national brand’s terms below, we quote what that brand publishes on its own site.

Flat $19.99/mo monitoring, no contract required — while the big brands charge $50–90 on long contracts.
What changes when the company is local.
Three jobs sit behind every alarm system. Someone designs and installs it, someone watches it around the clock, and someone comes back when a sensor drops off. With a national brand those are often three different companies. With a local company they’re usually one.
Who walks your house
At Alamo, a security analyst walks the property with you before anyone quotes a price. No commissioned sales reps. No pressure. The plan comes out of what your doors, windows and driveway look like, not out of a package chart.
Who installs it
A licensed, salaried Alamo technician — not a subcontractor. The same person you’ll see on a service call two years from now.
Who answers at 9pm
Monitoring runs from San Antonio, so a person here in Texas responds when the alarm trips.
National brands vary on this. Some install with in-house crews, some through authorized dealers, and monitoring may sit in a different state from the office that sold you the system. Ask any company you’re considering which of the three jobs it does itself.
How the contract and the monthly bill really work.
This is the biggest split, and it’s the one worth reading closely before you sign anything.
The national model bundles equipment into a long monitoring agreement. Monthly rates generally run $45–$90 on 36 to 60 month terms. As published on adt.com on September 5, 2026, ADT lists professionally installed monitoring starting at $45.99/mo, a 36-month monitoring contract (24 months in California), and equipment financing of up to 60 months. Its residential terms state that on early termination, ADT may charge 75% of the monthly service charges due for the balance of the term.
Ours works the other way. Professional monitoring is $19.99/mo, or $24.99/mo with video analytics and cloud recording. A contract is never required — we’ll write one if you want to lock your rate. Equipment is quoted on site after the free walkthrough, and you own it.
Do the arithmetic before you decide. A low monthly rate attached to a five-year financing agreement is a different offer from a low monthly rate you can walk away from. Read our San Antonio home security cost breakdown or the no-contract page for the full picture.
Is the equipment and the app any different?
Often less different than you’d expect — and that surprises people who assume a national brand means better technology.
Our systems run on Alarm.com with Qolsys panels. Alarm.com states on its own site that its services are “exclusively sold, installed, and supported by a nationwide network of authorized Service Provider partners” — meaning you cannot buy it direct, and many independent local companies across the country deliver the identical platform. The app a local dealer sets up can be the same software a much larger company installs down the street.
Not every national brand uses it. ADT publishes its own app, ADT+, built around ADT and Google Nest devices rather than Alarm.com. Platforms differ by company, not by company size.
Compare this instead: does one app run your alarm, cameras, locks and thermostat together, or are you juggling three? Do you own the panel? Can the company service it itself?
Who shows up when something breaks?
Every system needs a visit eventually. A sensor battery dies, a camera gets bumped, you remodel a wall. The difference between companies shows up on that day, not on install day.
Our technicians are salaried Alamo employees, so there’s no incentive to stretch a visit or skip one. Most service calls get handled the same day, with no third-party dispatch in the middle.
The pattern to watch for with any large provider is the parts-in-the-mail model, where a call-center agent walks you through swapping a device yourself. Fine for a battery. A bad fit for a camera on a second-story eave or a panel that won’t talk to the cell network.
Ask any company whether its installers are employees or subcontractors, and what its normal wait is for a service appointment.
When is a national brand the better choice?
Sometimes it is, and we’d rather say so than pretend otherwise.
You move often. If you relocate every year or two across states, a national footprint that follows you — or a DIY system you pack in a box — is simpler than starting fresh with a local company each time.
You’re renting short-term. Renters who need something removable are often better served by a self-install kit than by a professionally installed panel and wired sensors.
There’s no established local company where you live. Local only helps if the local company is good. In a small town with no licensed, well-reviewed alarm company nearby, a national brand with a real service presence beats a one-truck operation you can’t verify.
We serve San Antonio, Austin and Houston. Outside those metros, the honest advice is to find the best licensed company where you are.
How do I check out a local alarm company before I sign?
Twenty minutes of homework separates a good local company from a bad one. Do it in this order.
- Verify the license. The Texas Department of Public Safety regulates the private security profession in Texas. You can look a company up yourself through the TOPS Records/Status Search, or start at the DPS Private Security page. Ours is #B05229001.
- Read the reviews with dates on them. Volume and recency both matter. We hold 4.9 stars across 1,300+ Google reviews — read them here.
- Ask who monitors and where. Get a city and a state, not a brand name.
- Ask who owns the equipment when the agreement ends, in writing.
- Get the total, not the monthly. Equipment plus monitoring times the term length is the number to compare.

Is a local alarm company better than a national one like ADT?
It depends on what you’re optimizing for. Local usually wins on price, contract flexibility and service speed — our monitoring is $19.99/mo with no required contract, while ADT publishes professionally installed monitoring starting at $45.99/mo on a 36-month contract (adt.com, September 5, 2026). National wins if you move between states often or live somewhere with no established local company to vet.
Do local security companies use the same monitoring as the big brands?
They all provide 24/7 professional monitoring, but the station location differs. Ours is in San Antonio, so a person in Texas responds when your alarm trips. Large providers may monitor from a different state than the office that sold you the system. Ask any company for the city and state of the station that will actually receive your signals.
Are local alarm companies cheaper than ADT?
Usually on the monthly, yes. National monitoring generally runs $45–$90/mo on 36–60 month agreements; ours is $19.99/mo, or $24.99/mo with video analytics and cloud recording. Where local can cost more is up front, because you buy your equipment outright instead of financing it inside a long contract. Compare the total across the full term.
Do I own my equipment with a local company?
With us, yes — the panel, sensors, cameras and doorbell are yours. That is not the industry default. ADT’s published residential terms state that a professionally installed system remains the property of ADT (adt.com, September 5, 2026). Whichever company you choose, get equipment ownership answered in writing before you sign.
How do I check if an alarm company is licensed in Texas?
The Texas Department of Public Safety regulates private security licensing in Texas. Search the company or its license number through the TOPS Records/Status Search at tops.portal.texas.gov, or start from the DPS Private Security section. Alamo Smart Home holds Texas license #B05229001. If a company won’t give you its number, that’s your answer.
Is the app worse with a local company?
No — often it’s the same app. Alarm.com states that its services are sold, installed and supported only through authorized service provider partners, so local dealers and much larger companies can deliver identical software. We run Alarm.com on Qolsys panels: arming, cameras, locks, lights, thermostat and notifications in one app.
Can a local company take over my existing alarm system?
Sometimes. We can often take over compatible existing panels, and the free on-site analysis is where that gets confirmed — an analyst looks at what’s actually on your wall and tells you straight whether it can be reused or should be replaced. Bring your current paperwork to that visit, since your existing agreement may have its own terms.
What should I ask a local security company before signing?
Five things. What’s your Texas license number. Are your installers employees or subcontractors. Where is the monitoring station. Do I own the equipment when we’re done. And what is the total cost — equipment plus monitoring across the whole term. We’ll answer all five on the phone at (210) 625-6575 before anyone visits.
